Dr. Anthony J. Masys is a highly experienced and respected MBA professor at University Canada West (UCW). With a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the University of Leicester, a Master of Science in Underwater Acoustics and Oceanography, and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Royal Military College of Canada, Dr. Masys brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the classroom.
Currently, he is sessional faculty at UCW teaching Business Environment, Ethics & Strategy. His teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of critical and integrative thinking in fostering a more holistic or systemic perspective of problem spaces and challenges traditional notions of failure by encouraging students to stretch and develop themselves.
In addition to his teaching role at UCW, Dr. Masys is also a senior defence scientist with the Centre for Security Science, Defence R&D Canada, Department of National Defence. He has served as a scientific advisor to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and is a Visiting Professor with the International Centre for Policing and Security at the University of South Wales. He is also the CEO and President of Anomaly Solutions (A Think and Do Tank).
Dr. Masys has conducted research, lectures, and workshops across five continents, working with various security and public safety stakeholders to better understand global disasters and design resilience strategies for security and public safety. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Springer Series: ‘Advanced Sciences and Technologies for Security Applications’, and has published extensively in the domains of physics and the social sciences. His books include: ‘Opening the Black Box of Human Error’, Networks and Network Analysis for Defence and Security, Disaster Management- Enabling Resilience, From Problem Framing to Problem-Solving: Applications of Systems Thinking and Soft Operations Research for managing complexity, Exploring the security landscape: non-traditional security challenges, Disaster Forensics: understanding root cause and complex causality, Asia/Pacific Security Challenges: Managing Black Swans and Persistent Threats, Security by Design, Global Health Security, Science Informed Policing, Sensemaking for Security, Handbook of Security Science (forthcoming in 2022) and Handbook of Foresight, Strategy and Future Studies for Defence and Security (forthcoming in 2022). His research interests include crisis leadership, safety and security culture, policing and security, terrorism/counter-terrorism studies, global health security, disaster forensics, risk, crisis and disaster management, resilience, systems thinking, scenario planning, human security, complex socio-technical system analysis, modelling and simulation, and action research.
